The 1200 Block Pocket Park is an economic and social development project that will help to beautify Uptown Columbus, while also promoting activation and reuse of the underutilized median in the 1200 Block. This pilot project, conceived by the design team led by The Cotton Companies, will serve to repurpose a portion of the median in the 1200 Block of Broadway that once housed a large Oak Tree. The removal of the tree, due to poor health, left an opportunity to create a public gathering space – a passive park – that would be inviting and create a central gathering spot for the general public. It will help to create public space, spur increased pedestrian traffic and therefore revitalize a block that is currently in the throws of re-construction.
The park will contain LED lighting, 6 Swamp White Oak Trees for shade, locally sourced custom seating cubes and custom concrete rock reproduction seating pods. The project is a collaborative effort between several public and private entities. Funding for the project was provided by several private entities and individuals.
